Who’s Doing It and Why?

who-and-whyIf you’re trying to convince others that eLearning is right for your organization or if you are curious about what others are doing, the results of this 2009 eLearning survey might provide you with the statistics you need.

Two publications, Learning Circuits and E-Learning News, polled their readership late in 2008. Out of 284 respondents, the top five reasons that companies used eLearning were for customer service training, end user training of desktop applications, general business skills (leadership, etc.), regulatory and compliance issues and for external clients. In addition, the survey found that the majority of people that use eLearning are employees (73%), followed by customers (22%).

Of the companies that responded, over 60% use a Learning Management System (LMS) to provide the infrastructure for their eLearning. The survey showed that organizations are using a diverse array of tools and products to provide online courses, including:

  • Web conferencing, video conferencing and virtual classroom tools for synchronous learning events
  • Authoring, simulation, and multimedia tools for developing online learning courses
  • Social networking tools, blogs and virtual worlds
  • Mobile learning
  • Podcasting
